About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ
How about Los Angeles to Shanghai (stay 72 hrs), then to Hong Kong (transit) and back to Los Angeles

A ticket showing a transit via HK is not sufficient. You are suggested to apply for a Chinese visa for this trip.
