Can you fly from Toronto to Shanghai and then 24 hrs later go Shanghai to Chicago.

I am afraid not, because this may be regared as a single return trip, not a direct transit via Shanghai actually. As I know, the thrid country should be in a different region. You can confirm this with your airline if necessary.0
