Were nails used to build the Forbidden City?

A recently viewed documentary on the History Channel indicated that there were no nails used to build the city. Why was nails not used and what did they use instead of nails?

Of course, many nails were used to build the palace. You may be misled.

The BBC documentary says no nails were used, however nails were used at some point to adorn the gates....so maybe none were used in the first parts of construction (the set up of the columns and roof placement), but used in later parts of the construction.
