Visiting Harbin in early January

I am planning to visit in January but I will be visiting Beijing and Shanghai first. What is the best way to get from these cities to Harbin? I know it will be freezing, but if we are staying for a few days, will we need to bring snow boots?

From beijing, it is suggested to take bullet trains and you will reach within around 8h.

From Shanghai, it is best to fly to the ice city.

Flying would be the easier way to get to Harbin, have visit that city twice in January , would take very warm clothes , and snow boots , if you have thermals would serggest packing them.
