Passport needed for Visa application and requirements

We are thinking of traveling to China in the fall of 2014 and were told we would have to leave our passports for a minimum of two weeks with the Chinese consulate. We are a little uncomfortable with leaving our passports and just want to verify the process of obtaining a Chinese L for travel?
