Is a work visa required for a dependent of a person working in China on a work Z?

My spouse and I are moving for her job. My current company wants to retain me as an employee, but have me work from home while I am there. Am I required to obtain a work Z to do this, considering my current employer will continue to pay me through our current US direct deposit system in a bank account in the US?

If you mean to work for a US company based n USA and get payment through your US bank account, then a work Z is not necessary. You can apply for a S type one to accompany your spouse's work Z.
