Can I leave Guangzhou Airport?

I have a Z visa for when I start work in Shandong. My flight has a layover in Guangzhou for 16 hours, is it possible to leave the airport and book a hotel for this time. My onward flight has been booked seperatly anyway. Any information would be a help.

If you plan to stay outside of the aiport, you are required to apply for the stay permit when you land at the airport.
