About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

Transferring from Shanghai Pu Dong (PVG) airport to Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) airport.

I am travelling to Nepal this October with another adult and a child (3 of us total). We have an airport transfer on the way there between PVG and SHA, with a 4 hour window. I have several questions.
1. Will we need to collect our luggage and transfer it ourselves? Or does the airline (China Eastern) handle that?
2. We are U.S. citizens. Do we need a visa in addition to our passports to travel from one airport to the other?
3. What is the best mode of transportation to transfer between airports? (We arrive 5:05 am on a weekday and fly out from SHA at 9:05 am)
4. I'm assuming we will need to go through customs when leaving PVG and security again when arriving at SHA. How long does that usually take?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, if two parts of the trip are with China Eastern, the airline will handle your luggage for this transit. You can transit freely with your US passport and onward flight ticket between this two airports. The best mode of transportation should be the airport shuttle bus line 1, which can take you from PVG to SHA directly in around an hour. However, the first bus of the shuttle line leaves around 07:00, so time will be tight for your check-in and boarding at SHA. Going thorugh immigration at PVG requires half an hour to an hour. And you should spare at least 1.5h for the security things in SHA. So, you can refer to your airline if they can help you with this.
