I have Chinese student visa, do need a transit L for visiting other city in china?

i am coming to study and i have an X. i have booked the flight and next connecting flight for taiyuan is next day. almost 20 hours gab in next flight. i means that i have to stay 20 hours in shanghai for that " do i need a transit G to stay in shanghai? please reply as soon as possible?
