extensions from within China

With visa extensions obtained for a single entry tourist L, does it matter how many days it is for? What I mean is, for a 30 day tourist L you can get a 30 day extension and then a second 30 day extension, making 90 days in total. If you have a 45 day L (as I do) or a 60 or 90 day, is it the same - can you still get the 30 day extension periods here when it is due to expire?

Yes, an extension will generally be issued with 30 days as duration. So, it is 90 days in total if you have a single entry L and get it extended twice. It doesn't matter if you hold an L with 45 days or more, the duration issued to the extension each time is the same as 30 days.
