Tourist visa as extension to the 30 days no visa visit

Hello,
I plan to travel to Russia (Vladivostok) from China but I am not sure of the time it will take me to cross China (from Vietnam). Is it possible to get a proper tourist visa (30 days) as an extension to the free no visa period already offered by China ?

Sorry, you cannot apply for an extension if taking advantage of the 30-day visa-free policy.

Therefor to be on the safe side it is better to apply for an L (tourist) visa of 60 days, correct ?
