About:Chinese Embassy in Canada

Do I need a separate visa for mainland China and Hong Kong

I am travelling to shanghai then to Hong Kong, or I can have a consolidate one that can allow me to travel to both cities ?

Yes, you need to apply for two separately. But you can submit your applications to the embassy at the same time. The one for HK may take longer time if it will be sent to HK for approval.
