visa or travel document?

My son, 7, US born. Dad holds chinese passport, mom holds US passport. He has china visa in his old passport and visited once in 2010. He is going to visit again with a new book of passport this summer, shall he apply for travel documents( as some agency suggest) or visa? Do we have to be present in Embassy?

Hi, if you son holds US passport, he needs to apply for a Chinese visa L type from the embassy or consulate which hold consular jurisdiction of the place you live.
