Visa required for stopover?

Hi, I have a stopper for 1.5 hrs in shanghai then a 15 hr stopover in Beijing in which I plan to leave the airport. I hold an Australian passport. Do I need it?

Visa is not required if the stopover in total is less than 24 hours. You can apply for a stay permit at the airport if you plan to go out.
