About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa exemption for 72hr transit

The rules state that you can transit for 72 hours without a visa if you have an onward ticket to a 3rd country or region. I assume you can enter the City.
I bought a ticket from Holland to Beijing and was returning within 72 hours to a 3rd country France and was refused permission to fly without a visa. I was told that if I was flying to Australia or other countries or regions in that area it would have been ok. France is a country. Nowhere does it say you can only fly East.
Should I be compensated...who is right?

Hi, sorry to hear that. But the article here seems reliable as many others fly in this way. Some of my Chinese friends told me the same, as they read the original Chinese version by the authority. Please may I know if you bought tickets from different airlines? maybe they consider your case a single return trip.

Thanks for your reply...yes I bought from different airlines, outbound KLM inbound Air France. These tickets were bought through an internet company but that shouldn't matter.
I bought the tickets to travel from and return to different countries, specifically, to ensure I was within the rules as I was interpereting them.

I was refused permission to board the first flight in Manchester.....apparently I have now been told that you have to travel on past China,,ie Australia..Korea etc...but nowhere does it state that in the Embassy guidelines....to rub salt into the wound as I landed in Beijing and approached passport control there were big arrows saying..."72 hour free transit passengers this way".....much easier to get one in the first place...that my advice.
