If you transit through two airports in China, you need to apply for a stay permit on the first stop at Kunming airport. You can use this 72 hour free transit for your return trip.

We were in the same case at Kunming when we went to Myanmar.
Be carefull, if your flight is not direct to the third country, you have to present VISA !

You will NOT have 72 h free Permit, only 48 h free one !!!
In our case, we have to buy other flight at the airport to get 72 h free Permit.

To ayman,
It is easy, you just need go to the Entry Frontier Office and fill up the entry registration card so that you will be issued a stay permit.

I don't think what E&S said is correct. A visa is not required if transit through two cities within 24 hours.
