Applying for Chinese visa in another country other than country of residence

we are travelling via the Trans Siberian Railway. We hold Australian passports but will be away from Australia for more than 3 months prior to entering China. We will be there for 5 days. Do we need a tourist L and can we apply for one in another country?

Yes, you need to get a tourist L. To apply in a third country is possible, but may I know where you will visit before mainland China? anyway, it is easy for you to get one in HK if possible.
