Transferring at Guangzhou airport for Beijing

Hi we are flying to Beijing from Sydney on southern china airlines and have to change planes at GZ.
What are the procedures for transferring flights & are we able to check our bags at Sydney to go through to Beijing or do we have to go through baggage claim at GZ.
