About:Chinese Embassy in Australia

Do I need a visa even though I will not be leaving the airport during my Shanghai transits between destinations?

I am an Australian citizen visiting Beijing for less than 72 hours. My flight is Tokyo - Shanghai(transit only) - Beijing(touring for less than 72 hours) and then from Beijing - Shanghai(transit only) - Hong Kong.

Yes, you need one even though you don't come out of the airport.
