About:History of Silk Road

Was the route that merchants travelled officially decreed as the Silk Road?

What I mean is, did the government actually draw out a whole route on the map and say that to trade, they HAD to travel along this route? Or was it just a bunch of small trails merchants took that eventually melded into one big road and was called the Silk Road?

No, the road was created by the merchants.
