Applting for a single entry visa in Tokyo

We are flying into Shanghai from the uk, then to Hong Kong, then to Xian, then to Tokyo and back to Shanghai. I have been told today that the tourist multiple entry will only cover 2 entrances into mainland and that we will therefore need to apply for a single entry one to get back onto
shanghai in Tokyo. We are only in there for a few nights will it be possible to get one back in time and is this a straightforward process?

louise. ur going the long way round, why do u go to shanghai then hong kong and then back into mainland? is it not more feasible to go xian, then hk? just wondering? anyway... if u have a multiple entry then is should last more then 2 entries! so u may have a double entry?
also now they give u a free 72 hr transit upon arrival in beijing and shanghai. so no need to get another one. so long as u stay within the city limits.

Hi, leaving for Hong Kong counts an exit, so a multiple entry is enough for your whole trip. I don't know why you had been told like that. Anyway, to get a new one in Tokyo is possible even you will stay there for a few nights.
