Yes, you need a G type one since your total stay in China exceeds 24 hours.

Hi, I contacted Beijing airport immigration for this, I was told if the two stopovers in China is less than 24 hours, visa is not required, but you have to apply for a stay permit after arriving at the first airport. For you, it should be Shanghai airport.

Stuart -thanks for your reply. Can you please call the Shanghai/Beijing immigration to find if they need a chinese transit G for 26 hrs transit time(LAX-PVG-KMG-CCU) ? I called china eastern and US chinese consulate and they said for just 24 hrs above the limit-I should be fine...Thanks.
