About:Chinese Embassy in Canada

Do I need visa from Shanghai to Kunming?

I am planing to transit through China this August. I am seeking an answer to the question do I need transit G from Shanghai to Kunming.

All of us (my family) holds Sri Lankan passports and we are all permanent residents of Canada. Sri Lanka is not under the Excepted 45 countries list.

I stay less than 24 hours in China. As per my transit, I land on Shanghai(Pudong) on 07-Aug-2013 (0505 AM) and then transfer to Kunming by 07-Aug-2013 1040 AM and then from Kunming I transfer to Sri Lanka by 07-Aug-2013 2 PM.

I appreciate your earliest possible response to clarify this matter so I can proceed with my travel across China without a doubt in mind.

Hi, visa is not required if your whole stopover in Shanghai and Kunming together is less than 24 hours. But be note that you need to apply for a stay permit after arrival at Shanghai airport.

Thank you so much for replying. This cleared my doubt.

BTW, "Stay Permit" should I get that at the time of arrival from the air port?

Is "Stay Permit" a visa in other words? hmm... are the charges same as "G" type one?

I could not find much information regarding this online. So your replies bring more clarity in to this matter, that to "Mars".

By the way is a "Stay permit" single entry or multiple, as I want to know if am to apply for that on my return journey if I transit through China?

It's difficult to describe it. In fact, it is just a stamp you get on your passport. If you transit through China on your return journey, you will get another stamp if you want to get out of the airport.
