Visiting Beijing for less than 72 hrs final destination is India then back to Tokyo, is visa needed?

We are a US passport holder military stationed in Japan and visiting Beijing for less than 72 hours with a final destination to India then back to Tokyo. Do we need to obtain a visa? There are some articles saying that you don't need one if you're visiting Beijing for less than 72 hours. Is this true?
