What is your terminate destination? If it is another country or HK or Macau, you don't need a visa to get out of the airport. Then you can surely visit the city during your layover. I suggest you go to the Bund, where you can have a look at the most attractive and well-known buildings on the Bund, Huangpu River and the Oriental Pearl Tower nearby. Near the Bund, I recommend you have a short stay at Motel 168 (the Bund branch).

It is about 49km or a littlr further from the airport to the Bund and the recommended hotel. You can take subway line 2 to East Nanjing Road first. Then take a taxi to thr Bund or nearby spots.
