Is it safe for a woman to travel to Chengdu by herself without speaking Chinese?

I'm thinking of going to Chengdu sometime in March for a week by myself, but people are telling me that it's not safe for me to go by myself since I don't speak the language. Can you let me know if this is correct and if it is, do you know of any tours that I can look into.

Also, is there any hotel or safe area that I should stay around with easy transportation to get around.
