Transit in Beijing for a 28 hour layover

I have a 28 hour layover in Beijing. Will I need a transit visa to leave the airport or just proof that I have a connecting flight?

Canadian passport holders can enjoy the 72 hours visa free transit in Beijing and Shanghai Airports. As long as you have the connecting flight ticket, you can leave the airport freely. However, this policy is not applied to people with a round trip ticket such as Toronto-Beijing-Toronto.
