If I want to go stay with my friend in Guangzhou to help with her children--not paid employment--is it possible to receive a tourist visa valid for half a year or more?

No, a tourist visa is generally valid for 30 days, but you can try to extend it at local PSB for 30 days each with supporting documents like bank account to cover your stay in China. L for family visit can be longer anyway.
