Is it safe to travel alone in China and how easy is it to get around if you only speak English

I am thinking of visiting China for three or four weeks in April or May and will be travelling alone.

Many foreigners go to China every year. I have been there for three times in the past five years. It is very safe to travel there, although you cannot speak Engligh.
In big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, many young people or citizens can speak English and the direction signs announcements have Chinese and English. For small towns, if you prepared well, you will not be lost.
