We live far from Marseille - 4 hours drive each way, so we wish to apply directly for express service and collect the next day - will stay with friends in Toulon overnight so do not have to travel too much - we can only travel to Marseille to  apply for it 11/12 and we leave on 15/12.

If you hold an ordinary passport, you should apply through the CVASC, and you  are able to get it on the second day after your submission by paying for an extra fee of 20 Euros.

IS IT COMPULSORY TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS NEW SERVICE CENTRE,  IF I WENT DIRECT TO THE CONSULATE WILL THEY REFUSE TO PROCESS MY APPLICATION?

Seems that you must apply through the center now if you are an ordinary passport holder.
