We have a 23 hour stopover in HKIA. Does it need to collect the luggage?

Do we need to collect our luggage at the stopover or are we considered in transit (even though we will leave the airport) ?

If you hold a through air ticket and check-in the luggage through before the first flight, you do not need to collect it.
