Do I need a visa for China as I have a 16 hour stopover

I am an Australian passport holder and returning from USA to Perth. I have a 16 hour stopover in Guangzhou and would like to leave the airport to get a hotel room. What visa if any do I need?

There is an option for you to apply a stay permit when you arrive at the airport. Or, you can also apply for a transit visa instead.
