My grandma has just passed away and my mother and dad wish to fly into China in the next 48 hours. Can we apply for a visa at the Guangzhou airport and is the visa application centre at the airport open 7 days and 24 hours?

It is possible but you have to show immigration officers the relevant documents. My suggestion is to apply for a visa with rush service. They will take your situation into consideration.
