Stop over in Guanzhou: Visa needed to visit the city less than 24h?

Hi,
I have a stop over in Guanzhou on my way to Europe. Arriving at 4.30pm and leaving the next day at 9.30am. On my way back 5 weeks after, I have another stop over, arriving at 6.05am in Guanzhou and leaving the same day at 9.30pm again. I would like to get out of the airport to see the city during my stop-over. Do I need a transit visa? I live in Brisbane but I have a French passeport. Thanks for your answer.

If you will visit the city during the transit, visa will be necessary.
