is it possible to get a visa to china but transfer via another country?

Would it be possible as a UK passport holder acquiring a visa from switzerland to china, transit via Abu Dhabi as I need to go there for the week before my planned visit to China

A single entry China tourist visa is valid for 3 months after issuance. So, you'd better apply in UK before leaving. Also, it is ok to visit China via another country.
