I am in Ukraine vacationing for a few weeks and was wondering if I can go to the Chinese embassy to obtain a visa for my trip to China from the US in October? I am a US citizen and the trip to China will be for 12 days from the US.

You can apply in Ukraine. But if you will go back to US and travel to China from there, you are suggested to apply in US where it is easier with the same visa fee. Processing from Ukraine for visa takes longer time about 8 working days, and you may be required additional requirements like residence permit or visa.
