About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

passport validity required for residence permit application in China

Hello,
I'm already here in China and would like to apply a temporary residence permit. Do I need to have a 6-month or 12-month validity of my passport? I need to be here in China for 12months,my passport will expire on August 19,2013.
Hoping to get your response.

Thanks,
Neil
