About:China Consulate in Houston

Do I need a visa for a layover if I want to leave the airport?

I am an American Citizen and I am traveling to Thailand with a long (20 hour) lay over in Beijing. I would like to visit the Great Wall during my lay over. Do I need a visa to leave the airport?

You need to apply for a China transit visa or tourist visa in advance if you plan to leave the airport for sight-seeing.
