Purchasing the Bullet Train ticket during New Year

Can I buy the ticket at the same day I want to go or should I purchase it in advance ? Can I travel from Beijing to Shanghai during the New Year's time such as 31st December or 1st January, will the train still operate during that time. Thanks

You had better book it in advance for tickets on the New Year's Day is really in great demand.
