Can I get transit visa in Airport?

I will be in Shanghai less than 24 hours on my way from New York to Bangkok, but I plan to stay overnight near the airport. Do I need to apply for the transit visa before I go or can I get it in airport? Do I need all those forms, the photo etc.?

If you hold US passport, you are not required visa to transit in Shanghai for a stopover less than 48 hours. It is also ok for you to go out of the airport without visa.
