I plan to join the 6 year program at jilin, can the X-visa be valid for 6 years, or do I renew each year? I am an American.

X visa is valid for 3 months only, but you are required to apply for a residence permit within 30 days after entering China. X visa expires when you get the permit. The residence permit works as a multiple entry visa and it is valid until you finish study.
