Cruise stopover for 1 day

My wife & I are stopping on cruise in Shanghai for 1 day in September. I have been told conflicting information i.e. if we do day tour arranged by cruise ship we don't need visa however if we "do our own thing" we do require a visa. Any answers.

Whether need a transit visa or not depends on the number of cities you will transit and the time length. If your transit in Shanghai is less than 48 hours, no visa is needed. You can leave the airport as well.
