Do we need transit visa for a stopover in China of 12 hours?

My wife and I are travelling to Paris on July and have a stopover in China for 12 hours. We both have Australian passports. Do we need a visa for this short time? If we do not need a visa, how long can we stay without one if we are in transit, but still wish to have some time downtown?

If you will leave the airport, you need to apply for a visa in advance. In China, stopover within airside without visa is 24 hours, and 48 hours if transit in Shanghai.
