About:China Visa Application in USA

We have an 11 hour layover in Beijing and would like to take a tour, do we need a full tourist visa?

We will have a one way ticket from Sydney to SFO (arriving by cruise to Sydney) and the layover on Cathay Airways is from 6 am to 5 pm. Will we be permitted to leave the airport to take a tour?

If you want to leave the airport for a tour, you need to apply for a tourist or transit visa in advance in US.
