i have australian passport do i need to get visa from chinese consulate

Yes, you need to apply for a China visa in advance. But better check Consular Districts of Chinese Embassy/Consulate in Australia first. If you location belongs to consular jurisdiction of the General Consulates of China in Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane, you need to submit your application to Chinese Visa Application Service Center CVASC instead.
