Is an Invitation letter an important requirement in applying a China Visa?

I plan to travel to China together with my son as tourist for only 6 days maximum, because I am working in the Philippines but my problem is the Invitation Letter. I don't have any one to ask for the Invitation letter which is needed in securing the Visa, but i have all the other documents needed..
