Travelling from Sydney to LA with 17 hour layover at Pudong Airport (Shanghai)

Hi, I am an Australian citizen and am travelling from Sydney to LA via Pudong Airport (shanghai). I have a 17 hour layover and am considering going out of Pudong airport during that time to visit the city of Shanghai. Having obtained visas for my destination ( United States of America ) - would i be able to obtain a free transit visa?

You don't have to apply for a transit visa, since Australian Passport holders are allowed to transit Shanghai for up to 48 hours without a visa. During the transit, they are even permitted to leave the Pudong Airport/Hongqiao Airport to enter the city.
