Can I get China visa in Rome?

While already traveling, I have been invited to visit my cousin in Beijing for 2 days, enroute from Athens to Hong Kong. I am an Australian passport holder (resident in the USA). I tried to get a visa in London, but they say "you have to be a UK resident." I am traveling to Rome shortly and will spend exactly 2 days there. Is there any chance I will be able to get the visa there?

Second, I booked my flight to Beijing and onward to Hong Kong (and from there to Australia) because the ticketing agent at Expedia erroneously told me I didn't need a visa. If I can't get Expedia to refund/re-route me to Hong Kong, can I simply move my onward flight to connect with my arrival in Beijing, and stay in the transit lounge?

What a shame! I haven't seen my cousin for 10 years ...

You can't get a China tourist visa in Rome because you are not a Italian resident. An applicant holding a passport other than Italian passport should provide the original and a copy of his or her permanent residence or work permit which should be valid for at least half a year (except for those who enjoy visa or permit exemption for residing or working in Italy).

According to your travel itinerary: Athens-Beijing-Hong Kong-Australia, you have to get a China visa for your visit to Beijing. If you can't get it, please move your onward flight to connect with your arrival in Beijing and stay in the transit lounge, the stopover in Beijing airport should be less than 24 hours, otherwise, a transit visa will be required.

Maybe you may change your itinerary and go to Hk first. When in Hk, you may try to apply for a China visa through China Travel service Hk Limited.
