If you travel to Hainan island, Shenzhen, or Zhuhai, it is possible for you to get a visa on arrival, otherwise, you have to apply for a China visa in advance, it is hard to get a visa on arrival without the official letter from an authorized unit which approves you to get a visa on arrival.
