If you hold a USA passport or travel document, yoou have to apply for a single entry transit visa for going out of the airport to visit Great Wall. USA and French nationals are not allowed to get a visa on arrival in China, if you remain in the airport during the 10 hours layover, a transit visa is not required. If you have a nationlitie of other country, it is possible for you to get a 24 hours stay permit when you arrive in Beijing airport by showing the valid passport and the confirmed flight tickets.
